The God’s work. Our hands. Day of Service is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. In 2018, in celebration of this event, Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church (RELC) will participate in several activities the weekend of September 9.
One is an outdoor activity on September 8 from 1:00-3:00pm; working at the HETRA facility in Gretna to help cleanup and spruce up the site. For this activity, helpers must be 12 years old and up.
Another activity will be working for Kids Against Hunger. This past year, our kiddos have been bringing their “noisy offerings” to the altar. They’ve raised over $1500 to go toward filling meals to be distributed to those starving in many countries. Meals will be filled on Sunday, September 9, from 1:30pm on at 156 & West Center Road (behind Tomato, Tomato). Kindergarteners on up may volunteer for this activity. Here is the SignUp Genius page to volunteer for both these activities. If you are working at HETRA, please complete this online waiver form for them.
The third activity will be the collection of items for Least of My Brethren, a group of volunteers working in the Omaha and Council Bluffs Metros to assist the homeless population in getting a meal, staying safe on the streets, getting to their job interviews and eventually furnishing apartments. We’re collecting money to purchase bikes for transportation and also collecting household goods to help this population settle into a home. A suggested donation for bikes is [$15 = 1/6th of a bike] and envelopes are provided on the bulletin board at church.
Items needed for homes are: towels and washcloths, cooking utensils and silverware, small appliances like toasters and coffee pots, brooms and dustpans, light bulbs, and area rugs, blankets and bike locks. Underwear for men (large) or women (medium), and cotton socks for men or women are needed, as well.
If you need GWOH t-shirts, please order them as soon as possible.
